About lorem ipsum.
What it is. Lorem ipsum is scrambled, meaningless Latin-ish text used as a stand-in for real copy while a design is being laid out. Because the words mean nothing, they don't distract a reviewer into editing the copy when the point is to evaluate the layout — typography, spacing, line length, and flow.
Where it comes from. The text is derived from a passage of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC), garbled over centuries of typesetting. The famous opening, Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, is itself a fragment — "lorem" isn't even a complete word (it's the tail of dolorem).
When to use it — and not. Great for early wireframes and component libraries. Worth replacing with realistic content before final review: real copy has different lengths, line-break behaviour, and edge cases (very long words, empty states) that lorem ipsum hides. Generate by words when you need to fill a fixed-size field, by sentences for captions and blurbs, and by paragraphs for article and body-copy mockups.
